"AMERICA DAY BY DAY": A COUNTER-CARTOGRAPHY
2019
Photography, Writing, Video, Public intervention, Performance.
My counter cartographic responds to Simone De Beauvoir’s 1947 road trip through the American Southwest. Using De Beauvoir’s book “America Day by Day” as a guide, I followed her traces and traveled 4,200 km by car through California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. This journey allowed a political dialogue to grow between me a Mexican fronteriza visual artist– and De Beauvoir, 70 years after her original road trip. This dialogue explores notions of territory, citizenship, and landscape from a decolonial feminist perspective.
